Police use excessive force AGAIN...on an 8-year-old boy

So many police officers are infamous for using excessive force on minorities. Police in Colorado, however, are now garnering headlines for pepper spraying an 8-year-old, not once, but twice- sounds pretty excessive to me. Add children to the list.

The little boy, who was attending a school for kids with emotional disturbance issues, threw a temper tantrum and reportedly ran around the class room with a piece of wood, tossed a couple of objects around, and said he wanted his teachers to die. No other students were in the classroom.

The teachers locked themselves into a closet and called the police. I would have done the same thing. I, however, would have expected the police to use a much more appropriate tactic on a child.

The police resorted to pepper spray immediately, before attempting to talk the child down (which has been done in the past and worked).

What I’d like to know is how are you going to justify using immediate force against a child, especially an emotionally disturbed one, who you are trying to assimilate into society by teaching to not be violent?

This example goes beyond the fact that sometimes police resort to unnecessary tactics. It just goes to further demonstrate that people our society truly does give up on these children at a young age. And that is exactly why they grow up to be criminals.

Okay, so I’ve taken 5 minutes out of my extremely busy day to blog about this because it makes my blood boil.

Amanda Bynes has just hit #1 in the Yahoo search engine- so she currently is the most searched item.

And why, you ask?

I wanted to inquire about this, as I forgot the actress even existed. I thought she might have gotten in a car accident. Or maybe she was diagnosed with cancer. Or maybe she was caught in the bathroom doing blow with Charlie Sheen. Or better yet, maybe she signed up to be a part of the Charlie Sheen orgy crew.

NOPE!

Amanda Bynes’ little dog just died. Yes, she became one of the most searched items in the world because she tweeted that her “dog is in heaven.”

Now I’m not trying to be cold-hearted, I’m a bigger dog lover than most. I do feel sorry for her. In fact, I wish the world would have paused when my Moonboots got sick.

But really though, this is news?

In case you didn’t know, it’s National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Week! That means you should hurry onto Youtube and struggle through watching the Sara McLaughlin ASPCA commercial. And donate money to important animal causes, of course.

I am currently sitting on the 2nd floor of my school sporting an orange ribbon (the color to represent this week) and tabling for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, trying to hand out materials and get donations for dogs and cats affected by the Tsunami in Japan.

No one is really into it. Except for me, of course.

But then again, I am one of those freaks who can name every breed of dog in the American Kennel Club.

Anyhow, in celebration of this important cause, enjoy these photos of my little angel sporting her snuggie. And not allowing me to make the bed or hang up clothes after doing laundry.

I’m really not shocked that a Miley blow up doll has hit adult store shelves now that she’s “barely legal.” Speaking of barely legal though, I’m curious as to the legality behind this. Miley is most definitely suing, probably in an attempt to protect her image.

But what did she think would happen when she strayed away from Disney to “move her hips like yeah?”

This company is definitely profiting off of Miley’s name and “likeness,” as these dolls were all sold out within 48 hours.

If she settles for royalties she can at least keep that “bad girl” image she went for in the first place.

What is this supposed to be?! Is this an attempt at trying to stay relevant? Gross!

I used to appreciate Katy Perry for standing out with her own style from other pop stars. I just hope she doesn’t continue to follow Lady Gaga’s lead. Gaga clearly started the “I’m awesome because I’m weird” trend- and now every pop star is following suit. I guess because they are all doing it it’s not really “weird” anymore. Ironic.

My manic shopping spree weekend

The sun has FINALLY decided to come out in San Diego. But before I head to the beach to get pummeled by waves and seaweed and watch old hairy men fall off of their boogie boards while attempting to look cool at the Wavehouse, I had to partake in my seasonal shopping frenzy.

First of all, I would like to take the time to bitch about the excessive amounts of flower prints that are in stores. I wandered into Urban Outfitters today hoping to find a cute little black summer dress (yes, I wear black in the summer)..but much to my dismay, ALL FLOWERS. And Urban Outfitters is merely one of the many stores guilty of this. Flower prints make me think of the 90s, and while tons of awesome things came out of the 90s (Yes, I’m thinking of the Spice Girls), flower print clothes weren’t one of them. I don’t know why I don’t care for this look…but I just, well, don’t! Give me bows, give me strawberries, give me cherries..but please…no flowers.

What are awesome, however, are polka dots. Polka dots highlighted my shopping extravaganza.

Case in point. This.

Betsey Johnson rarely gets it wrong. I feel like an obese kid in a candy store upon walking into this sweet shop filled with glitter, frills, and rebellious spoiled kids attempting to look rock and roll. Of course, I can only have one piece of candy as law school has sucked most of my money out of my pockets- so I picked out this adorable yellow polka dot bikini with blue trim. I almost went for the solid black one piece with a bow at the bottom, but I’ve done that look way, way too many times.

While searching for a wedding gift for my best friend, I also found an inexpensive but cute black polka dot dress at Target. I highly recommend scoping out the racks there. Target clothes get better and better every year!

I’m taking these back!!!!

So the major lapse in judgement this weekend occurred when I looked at the Chanel sunglasses in Nordstrom. Chanel shades are quite pretty, and quite out of my budget. I have to keep reminding myself that I am a starving student and that magic does not occur after swiping a piece of plastic. No fairy will appear and make that $340 on my credit card statement go away with the swipe of her wand and throw in a handbag just for the hell of it. Unfortunately, I caved into pressure when the Nordstrom worker and some shopper lady kept repeating over and over how “amazing!!!” these looked on me. Somehow I went from browsing the sunglasses to buying a pair that I didn’t even like! Look what’s on the side of them…FLOWERS. I hate flower prints!! So needless to say, these will be returned next week.

No weekend shopping extravaganza would be complete unless I hit up the vintage consignment stores in Hillcrest. People often complement me on my outfits, and I guess it’s finally time to announce to the world that I often put together these get-ups with used attire. Being poor, I have to ensure that I get the biggest bang for my buck, and when I go to Hillcrest, it’s like an orgasm comes with every dollar I spend. Red polka dot headband for four dollars? yes please! Little frilly summer dress for 11 dollars? Yeah baby! You can really find some great treasures if you go through these racks to create a style that is uniquely your own.

The LOL of the weekend happened at the Buffalo Exchange where I was trying to squeeze into a tiny black and red cocktail dress. I trade a ton of my clothes at Buffalo Exchange when I get over or outgrow (and by outgrow, I mean eat too many burritos) them. Several weeks ago, I traded a puffy black Forever 21 dress along with others for some J. Crew shirt that I later ruined in the dryer. After finally zipping up the cocktail dress, I heard some girl screaming “EWW!! GROSS!!” as if there was a dead hipster kid hung by an H & M scarf from the ceiling. I came out to see her wearing that puffy black Forever 21 dress I traded several weeks ago. “Who would wear this?!” she announced.

Well, I would, and I did. In fact, I actually looked pretty decent in it. I just didn’t have the heart to tell her she didn’t have the figure for it.

Today I awoke to the savory scent of farm fresh crepes. An awesome farmers market appeared outside of my window for spring time. I just moved into my new studio in Golden Hill several weeks ago, and I knew the area was awesome- but having a big farmers market every Saturday outside of my apartment has to be the cherry on top of the pastry! Ever since coming home from studying abroad in France, I have been searching San Diego for Nutella Crepes (one of the best parts of Paris!). Thankfully, they have finally emerged….several steps away from home! And although I can’t enjoy one of these pieces of french goodness while admiring Parisian architecture or strolling the beaches in Nice, I can do so while meeting all of my friendly, down to earth new neighbors. Score!

Rebecca Black: The teen sensation we LOVE to "hate"

I don’t know if you remember, but a few fridays ago a tsunami plowed the coast of Japan. Wait, now I know why you may have forgotten!

While thousands of Japanese civilians were left without family or homes, a young girl hailing out of my hometown in Orange County, CA began to garner headlines and turn the heads of Americans. Thirteen-year-old Rebecca Black, who had big dreams of becoming a pop sensation as many teen girls do, was launched into the public eye with her oh-so-popular song “Friday.”

Okay, so I’ll admit it- the song itself is pretty bad. We all know the infamous lyrics, “Tomorrow is Saturday, then Sunday comes afterwards.” The thing is, this young girl, who actually has a better singing voice than most when not auto-tuned, has remained a class act despite the flurry of cruel words spat in her direction.

Through this frenzy of media and talk about this young pop star, I can’t help but sit back and laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. The song is hailed as the “most hated” song in pop music. Or shall I say, the most ~~hated~~loved. Adults revert to a high school mentality and spew venom towards Rebecca, yet devote the time to watch it and post about it. People keep insisting that they despise this, yet parodies are spreading on Youtube like wildfire. Thousands of people tune in to watch her on television, and to top it all off she is selling plenty of copies on Itunes. Yes, people HATE this song, but they are paying 99 cents to download it.

Sadly, I am not shocked at how many people are taking aim at such a young girl. Some individuals have even been low enough to wish death upon her and if not that extreme, hopes she “grows up to become a bulimic.” Come-freaking-on. If you’re going to take aim people, why not take it at the producer who wrote the song, and is making a killing charging these girls’ parents a few thousand dollars to make them a “music sensations?”

And as the nation turns their heads away from the disaster in Japan and war in Libya to mock (and secretly love) this young starlette, there is someone who still remembers what’s truly important- Rebecca Black herself. She is donating proceeds from her song to go to victims in Japan. She most definitely shows the perfect balance of poise and perseverance through this situation. Also, this was a very intelligent PR move. Good job, Rebecca!

So maybe Rebecca Black is what’s wrong with the music industry today. However, if you truly “hate” something, don’t support it. And by support it, I mean don’t devote any of your time or money to it. If you do, just admit that “Friday” is awesomely bad and laugh about it. Young Rebecca is the one laughing at the end of the day. And hey, after a few glasses of wine this shit gets pretty fun to listen to.
